Techno Prisoners

Saturday night found me and my friend Mike Carlton (aka Sumatra 71) at the Green Iguana to see Brighton-based DJ/producer Adam Freeland.

I was a bit skeptical of seeing any kind of dance act at the Green Iguana, despite the fact that they've been bringing in some notable acts: from Armin van Buuren to Benny Benassi, thanks to the clout of John Santoro. I've been there for lunch and for happy hours, and it's designed to be more of a flip-flop bar and not a dance club.

Walking into the club, we were assaulted by the sounds of Florida breaks. I like to consider myself fairly open minded of all genres of music, invluding all sub-genres of electronic music, but Florida breaks make me cringe. We had to endure cheesy break versions of Ce Ce Penniston and Ferry Corsten, nursing our beers at the bar and watching frat boys make pathetic attempts at picking up pretty Asian girls.

All was forgiven when Adam Freeland came on stage. Starting with "Stress" by Justice, he didn't let up for the next hour and 45 minutes, playing a scathing set of hard electro beats..from Evil Nine to Bloc Party and plenty of mind blowing tracks that I didn't even know. I was on my feet for virtually the entire time...a phenomenon that I rarely experience these days. It was a very enthusiastic crowd, but not packed which suited me fine...plenty of room for dancing. Mike had a big grin on his face for most of the time..I probably did too.

So maybe I'll make it back to the Iguana if they keep bringing good talent. I'll even be willing to endure bad tunes and frat boys.
