Baby's first playlist

My wife and I have welcomed a new life into the world. It has been a joyous exhilarating and tiring experience. Through it all, I knew I wanted to expose him to music even at the earliest age, even in a sterile environment like a hospital. Thanks to technology that has been an easy task.

Pandora radio through the iphone has been a godsend while trapped in the hospital. Pandora allows you to create a "station" from any artist or song you like, playing songs similar in style to that which you've chosen. There are also genre specific stations. I started with a couple of different genres, settling into an ambient/lullaby station for most of the time in the hospital. In fact, some of baby's first songs he heard out of the womb included:

Thievery corporation. Treasures
Underworld. Two months off
Sasha - Wavy gravy
Stereo mcs - Connected
Clash - Should I stay or should I go?
Pixies - Wave of mutilation
Sex pistols - God save the queen

Another source of music has been the Rockabye Baby series, featuring lullaby renditions of songs from the Cure, Nirvana, the Pixies, the Beatles, U2 and more. We're planning on putting all of them on an ipod and playing them as he sleeps.

The lost 80's

Playing music at the Castle almost every week is, for the most part, a joy. Last week, a pretty woman approached me requesting 80's music, a genre I play sparingly for several reasons. The main reason is that I lived through it and I've heard all the new wave classics so many times I'm sick of them. Instead, I try to play remixes. So when I played a remix of an 80s song instead of the original, she almost got belligerent. I know I shouldn't be so critical or elitist as this girl looked young enough that

The end result is that it set me on a nostalgia trip of 80's music that is simply no longer heard. Not at clubs. Not on 80s retro shows. Not even on Sirius XM. Perhaps on internet radio stations such as flashback alternatives

My vinyl collection is one way to feed that nostalgia fix. Another way these days is youtube. I'm thankful that there are enough people out there with enough spare time on their hands to upload music videos that I haven't seen in years, if not decades. Below are a few songs I discovered on my last trip.

Bourgeous Tagg- Mutual Surrender

You may know this band from their Beatles-esque song "I Don't Mind". This one came first and I liked it better.

Pseudo Echo - Listening

Before this Aussie band had a new wave semi-hit with a cover version of Lipps Inc's Funkytown, they This particular song actually got a rockier face lift on their second album

The Models - Out of Mind out of sight

This was the only song I knew this song from them...I liked the horns. Another Aussie band....props to nzoz you has several youtube channels devoted to Kiwi and Aussie 80s music.

Love and Money - Candybar Express

Somewhere on a tape I had the Models song and this tune back to back, therefore they will always be that way in my mind. Plus they both sound similar to me.

The next time I have a hankering for some obscure 80s I'll be sure to share.

Soundtrack to a Saturday afternoon

Yesterday I had another opportunity to DJ out in front of the Tampa Museum, providing music for museum patrons as well as the park. It also gave me an opportunity to play a lot of great loungy downtempo stuff that I don't get to do a whole lot of.

I had the opportunity to play for the grand opening of the museum two weeks ago on the 6th as well...it was a blast, but I didn't have the wherewithal to jot down my playlist.

With this and my gigs at the Tampa Theatre, I guess I'm becoming the "arts" DJ....now all I have to do is get in with the performing arts center and Tampa is mine!!!
